Knowing how to market yourself is an important skill to help your personal and professional development as you progress from academia into the industry.

Writing resumes and Cover Letters that get results

In today’s market, employers can receive hundreds of applications. Writing a resume and cover letter that gets noticed has never been more critical. We will discuss how to improve your chances of getting an interview by writing informative, targeted resumes and engaging cover letters.

How to Stand Out on LinkedIn

Find out how to create a professional, engaging profile that stands out from the crowd. In addition, we will discuss ways to maintain an active presence on LinkedIn, as well as useful features of the platform.


12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Networking: Working effectively in a virtual world

Find out how you can tap into the hidden job market, set networking goals, conduct information interviews, network STARS and the frequency of contact system.


1:00 pm - 1:30 pm

Shaun Moore is a senior scientist at AstraZeneca with a PhD from the University of Calgary, he’ll talk about his experience transitioning from academia to industry.


1:30 pm - 2:00 pm

Professor from the Biological Sciences at the University of Calgary, Dr. Ray Turner will give a talk about his experience using wet lab skills in Biochemistry companies.


2:00 pm - 2:30 pm

Andrew Hagner is a Laboratory Automation Scientist at Notch Therapeutics in Vancouver. During his academic career, Andrew transitioned from graduate work in skin stem cell research under Jeff Biernaskie at the University of Calgary, to an applied, multidisciplinary stem cell bioengineering lab, with Peter Zandstra, when the lab opened at UBC. His projects included work with an industry partner to support a clinical trial (ECT-001), and grant writing for an international CIFAR application on engineering biological emergence. He served the UBC postdoc community as VP Operations (postdoc assoc.), and was recently invited by UBC to represent postdocs in developing the In-Sites program, connecting postdocs with industry partners.

3:30 pm - 4:00 pm

To end the day, meet Suharsh Shah! He completed his PhD in Respiratory Sciences with a focus on asthma and allergy and has over 8 years of experience in molecular biology, biochemistry, pharmacology, immunology and/or oncology. He currently works as a medical science liaison at Novartis! Come join and learn how Suharsh carved his path from PhD to working in the industry!


4:00 pm - 4:30 pm

Mary Medysky is an accomplished international research professional and medical science liaison with 6 years of experience in oncology clinical trials. She has three years of experience in a physician facing role and expertise in clinical trial design and execution, regulations, and compliant data dissemination.
