Dr. Shehzad Iqbal is a Sr. Medical Director at Moderna and comes from an extensive academic and industry-based Research & Development (R&D) background with a focus on infectious diseases and vaccine development. He began his career at Sanofi Pasteur as a scientist working on discovery/preclinical studies of vaccine candidates as well as the development of clinical trials. He then moved to analytical R&D where he worked on product development and was a project leader for the HIV vaccine portfolio, conducting follow-up clinical trials for the world’s first ever successful HIV vaccine candidate. His long-standing interest in the advancement of vaccines in public health spurred his move to GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), enabling him to navigate the complexity of bringing vaccines out of R&D and implementing them in the population. There he led the pediatric portfolio of vaccines and eventually progressed to become the Chief Scientific Advisor (Scientific Director) for GSK Vaccines in Canada. His end-to-end experience from early discovery to lifecycle management of vaccines combined with his passion for public health continue to be a corner stone in his work to ensure novel vaccines reach the populations they are designed to protect.
